The health and wellness industry is one of the largest, global industries in the world. Not only are we becoming more conscious about what we put into our bodies, but we are starting to realize what we put on our skin. Our skin is our largest breathing organ and absorbs anything we put on it into our bloodstream within 26 seconds. If you ever notice that overpowering smell/taste of alcohol after rubbing your hands with hand sanitizer, that’s why. So naturally, we should be concerned about what we are putting on our bodies just as much as we are about what we consume. So, how do you make the switch? Here are a few things to look out for and avoid when shopping for your skincare or makeup products:
- Parabens
Parabens are a type of preservative that extends the shelf life of a product. Although that’s not so bad, this type of preservative is closely linked to breast cancer. - Phthalates
Phthalates are chemical found in plastic products but also used to intensify and enhance fragrances. This chemical is linked with the rise of ADHD, autism, and infertility. - Mineral Oil
Not a lot of people know about this one. With oil cleanses and natural oils becoming so popular, some might assume mineral oils are beneficial… but they’re not. Mineral oil, which is essentially petroleum jelly, is a byproduct of crude oil. The stuff you are putting in your gas chamber is not something you want on your skin. Mineral oils are incredibly thick and actually block your pores. Although petroleum jelly and similar products feel hydrating, it isn’t allowing your skin to breathe and eventually dries it out. - All “Natural” Ingredients
But isn’t natural good? Yes, if “natural” means organic and has the appropriate certification like Formen products ;). Without a product being certified organic, “natural” products can include animal fats and byproduct from animal rendering plants which are not at all sanitary and something you do not want to be lathering into the skin.
But even trying to avoid one of these can be a daunting task and looking through a product’s ingredient list is time consuming. But don’t worry, we’ve done it for you. Shop Formen’s certified organic and paraben-free skincare line here! Regardless of what you are using on your skin, make the conscious decision to shop for products that are truly pure and safe.
